Uthana Mission runs a Food Programme to feed underprivileged people who reside at one of the major train stations in Kolkata. Over the years the programme has provided close to 100,000 hot meals, delivered fresh every day, 365 days of the year.
This programme commenced in 2005, to alleviate some of the suffering of the destitute people that call the platforms and surrounding areas of the train station home. Our team has not missed a day since the program commenced and much of the success of this program is due to the commitment of our local team in Kolkata.
Our team prepare and package the meals at a
local family-run canteen. They then take the food to the needy. First they help the recipients to wash their hands
and open the food parcels for them.
A hot meal of Bengali traditional food.
They interact with the recipients. Even if they don’t reply - as these people are not used to be spoken to, some are considered 'untouchables' in Indian culture.
They also monitor and look out for those
who may be ill or dying, alerting other health NGO's.
The annual cost to buy, prepare and feed each person is approximately AU$80.00 per month equating to roughly AU$1,000.00 per year per person.
Please donate today and care for one extra person at
your dinner table tonight.
